Between the Raindrops Susan Schussler 9780989033312 Books

Between the Raindrops by Susan Schussler is a nice get-away from the usual romance novel. While this is Schussler’s first novel to be published, she has skillfully developed her characters with the depth of someone who has written multiple successful novels. The witty dialogue made me laugh aloud and the vivid descriptions of people reaching out to try for love after being hurt in the past was tender and touching. This book was refreshing since it did NOT follow tired, formulaic plot devices like “what if he doesn’t love me, what if he does”. None of the characters tried to push away the other because they were afraid of investing too much of themselves in the other or opening up to the other completely. Instead Between the Raindrops takes some interesting and unexpected turns that are surprising and exciting. The reader laughs and cries and finishes the book with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation for the love in their own life.

Between the Raindrops Susan Schussler 9780989033312 Books Reviews

Jon (aka Will) is an A-list actor in Hollywood who anonymously meets Sarah online. They start chatting and, over weeks and months of emails and phone calls, they fall in love. He finally reveals his identity at a rock concert in her home town of Minneapolis. Once they meet IRL, their love continues to grow despite dangerous paparazzi, screaming fans and hate mail. But is Sarah's love strong enough to withstand the harsh reality of life with a super star?

I liked this book. It started out a little too quickly and some important scenes (meeting IRL for the first time!) were a bit rushed for me. And the dialogue--especially in the beginning--was sort of superficial. They would throw one-liners at each other but then tell you something like, "oh we also discussed politics and the situation in Darfur." I assume, that was done to show the reader how SMART everyone was. It actually came off as the opposite to me but reflected more upon the writer than the characters.

Nevertheless, I liked the characters, for the most part. Jon seemed genuine (though the odds of a child actor with rich, famous parents growing up this "normal" in Hollywood are slim to none.) He was totally hot but also sweet.

Sarah seemed down to earth and I REALLY liked the fact that her looks weren't continuously discussed. She was obviously pretty but there weren't endless rhapsodies on her breasts or ass or whatever. Jon repeatedly said that she was beautiful on the inside and it made her even more beautiful on the outside. I liked that. I get tired of hearing how unnaturally model perfect everyone is in these books.

*******MINOR SPOILER
At one point Jon suggests they take a "break" from each other. I agreed with Sarah's friends--it always means "seeing other people." Who doesn't know that?? For sure, a Hollywood actor would, it's not like he grew up in the jungle. I bet even guys in the jungle know what "taking a break" means. If that wasn't his intent, why couldn't they have just said they could TELL everyone they broke up, even if it wasn't true. Stupid.
*********END SPOILER

Anyway, the Hollywood scene seemed to be mostly realistic. Pretty good for someone from Minnesota (and I am in L.A. and was in the biz before I had my kidlets) so kudos to the author on that one. Some of the characters were a bit overdrawn (Issac). I don't think they would have freaked out about Jon being with someone on a steady basis, even if she wasn't famous. There's the whole Cinderella aspect to it and then, of course, the press can look to find the cracks in their relationship after that. All press is good press, you know.

One major flaw I found was in the last dramatic "incident". I won't give it away but if Jon was gone two hours why would the Mercedes still be there? And who was the other woman? Unexplained and odd. Did I miss something?
If you'd like to discuss, come back and comment after you read the book!

I do recommend it as a quick, easy read. Good for the beach. Or, this winter on the east coast, if you're snowed in. ;)

BTW it's not technically a cliffhanger. But the ending is abrupt and Sarah and Jon's story is continued in another book which, at this time, is not out. Hopefully it won't take too long.
Johnathan and Sarah's story is so amazing. The perfect beach read -- sweet and easy to read. I couldn't put it down. Jaded Hollywood actor find hope in a girl he doesn't believe he deserves.
I LOVED IT! I stumbled upon Schussler’s character blogs first and knew right away that I had to get the book. Between the Raindrops is fresh and exciting. The details pulled me right in. The best books make you feel like part of the story and this book does just that. It’s current with pop culture references and the intensity of college love. It brings you through a myriad of emotions with loss and life challenges, and is just steamy enough where it should be. The story is creative, yet believable, and will make a great “feel-good” adventure movie someday. It’s a beautiful story that I have and will continue to recommend. You won’t be disappointed!
5 stars. Absolutely loved reading about Sarah abd Jon aka Will. This story was captivating and had me from the beginning, I couldn't stop reading. I highly recommend this book, you won't be disappointed. I can't wait for the next chapter to see what is going on in the lives of Sarah and Jon. This book is definitely a must have, buy it today. This book has suspense and lots of love.
I want a Jon, the way he loves Sarah and isn't afraid to say it and show it is amazing and loving. I really enjoyed this series and I loved both the concert meeting and the island wedding. This series felt more like one long book and I enjoyed that.
This book was a romance suspense. The twist at the end was unexpected. The story line was good & kept my interest. Being completely honest for those who have my same view, there are a few sex scenes. While not as graphic as some books I have read, they are there. Without going into detail so as not to spoil it for the next reader, there are twist and turns in this book. A good read!
Between the Raindrops is a quick read. The story had some twists and turns but sadly, they didn't make my heart race nor make me nervous. I liked both characters and thought they had great chemistry together but when I got to the end and found out there is another book, I liked the book less. I am just not certain there is enough tension, mystery, intrigue to warrant another book, unless the author is moving on to other couples... But it appears she is continuing the story of Jonathon (Will) and Sarah.

I really think I would have given it four stars if it were wrapped up at the end. I did enjoy it as I was reading it. I liked the parents and friends, enjoyed the story line of how they met and the paparazzi element to it. I did think it was weird that parents named one boy Jonathon and another Jack (historically known as a nickname for John), although Jack itself has become more popular than John. That is somewhat nit-picky, but it was glaring at me.

I am glad I read it--but feel no need to read book 2 in this series.
