This was definitely not as good as the other books in the Mallory series.
Here, Mallory is not only damaged as usual, but she is cruel.
There are so many suspects in this mystery with many corpses that it
Is impossible to have any sympathy for any of them.
the story unfolds in a Manhattan theater with actors, playwrights
and stagehands. They are all unbelievable.

It Happens in the Dark A Mallory Novel Carol O'Connell 9780399165399 Books Reviews

This has been sitting on my shelf since I bought it two years ago after pre-ordering it in hard cover. I read about 50 pages when I got it and then set it aside; I picked it up again in anticipation of the new Mallory novel. AND sad to say, I hated this. O'Connell has a very specific writing style which was just irritating to me this time around, there were too many weird characters, a too twisted story, and frankly, I ended up flipping to the end. I have not pre-ordered the next installment.
Having just finished It Happens in the Dark, ont thought kept running through my head. Mallory is , quite simply, the best female character in this genre. Not to say that there are not some wonderful female detectives such as Smoky Barrett, Maggie O'Dell, D.D. Warren. But Mallory is in a class by herself. I have followed this series since the first book and, time after time, I am in awe when reading the next installment. Mallory's intensity, her personal version of right and wrong, her persistence, her strength both physical and mental, how she became Mallory - all of these blend together to make her the quintessential female detective not afraid to do what SHE feels is right to arrive at the truth. The only issue I had with the book was the last page. I read it several times but it did not help my confusion. I really am at a loss as to what to think. I know what my initial thought was and it truly frightened me! If someone out there has there opinion on the ending, I would love to hear from you! If you are a true Mallory fan you need to read the book or else, "You're dead."
Is this really Carol O'Connell writing about Mallory? It doesn't sound or feel like it.
If you have been following the Mallory series as I have, this may disappoint.
Too much of it is spent characterizing her as machine like and second-guessing not only what she will do in given situations,
but her motives as well. Previously this author let the story tell itself without interpreting the character.
I resent that Mallory is being drawn so negatively - and Charles being depicted so comically - after having already established who they were in previous tomes. The core characters were always much more endearing, though Mallory may have been more aloof and unapproachable than most heroines and Charles a bit more awkward.
The story line not unpredictable, but decidedly less engaging than the previous books I have read by this author.
I hate to say it, but I wasn't as impressed by the style, characters, story as I would have liked to have been.
Two or three stars? This was the first of Carol O Connell"s Mallory books to disappoint, and it really disappoints. Kathy was a wonderful heroine, able to get waitresses to serve her, managing her boss and senior
police officials, able to grab info through computers, always thinking ahead of her colleagues. Her best friends are an alky cop and a shy, brilliant, ugly genius She has a truly terrible past, which marked her dreadfully. Her friends forgive her a lot because of her past, and because of her charismatic beauty and obvious need for love, that she is unable to show. The earlier Mallory books each show her wounded by her failure to protect one or more of the characters . She avenges the death of her foster father and then of her mother and finds her father. She lives to protect.
These nuances vanish in the latest Mallory book. Kathy is simply cold, rude, pointlessly vengeful to her friends,, unlovable. Many of the scenes seem direct but inferior copies of those in earlier books. Charles's medications on Kathy at the end are very like those in The Chalk Girl. Kathy's way of dealing with a crook who cannot be punished through the normal channels, is a rip off of how she does it in Shell Game. The circle of friends, the poker game, all seems copied from earlier books, without any freshness or conviction. Worse, Kathy, who develops a special character in the earlier books, ( yes, she has a heart, cares for the 'sheep, is a paladin, ) is simply a mean person on this book. She keeps interrupting . No one talking to her can finish a sentence, and she never listens, new and unappealing traits. The game played with her foster father that she uses to kill the bad guy is not convincing, and os also nasty, whereas the eerie death of the bad guy in Shell Game is thrilling and completely credible. The overall plot is poor The motives for the killings and the approach of the bad guy, simply absurd. Come on Carol, please give us back the real Kathy. And tell us what happened to her after she found her father in Shark Music, please do.,
Don't buy this book unless you have read the 12 other Mallory novels because you will not see the characters who were so fully drawn and understandable and populated the previous novels. You will spend your reading time wondering why everyone feared and some loved her. The Mallory you read in this book is truly in the dark for new readers who must come away wondering why Charles loved her and others were awed by her. For old readers she is a whisper of her former self and Charles and all the others around her in the previous books have been thrown in just to fill up space. O'Connell is clearly through with Mallory - - as the last chapter in the book indicates by its summary of Charles' life (with a few words about Mallory). I wish she could have ended it all with Mallory having absorbed some of the love around her and giving us a feeling that she had some purpose other than to solve crimes. I hated this book because Mallory is walking away into the dark without a happy ending. But do read the other novels. O'Connell is a fine writer and well worth spending time with.
