I Can't Go On I'll Go On A Samuel Beckett Reader Samuel Beckett Richard W Seaver Books Reviews
Fine book for those who appreciate Samuel Beckett's writing. There is interesting biographical data and critique. Would have prefered a little less commentary and a little more Beckett.
Didn't care for the book, but service was good
I'm left wanting more...and I think that was the point. This book is unique because its compiled and written by a long time supporter and publisher of Beckett's work even before Beckett had very much of a following. We're in the safe hands of a long time Beckett lover. Becket is more than just the guy who wrote "waiting for Godot". I get the impression form this book that Beckett really shines in his novels.
One might try reading both Beckett and Joyce by listening to a computer generated voice set to the fastest possible setting. One should attempt to fall partially asleep as the voice reads. Do not try for understanding so much as vertigo. Let the words call up images faster than your brain can process them. I've tried both these authors at normal speed and attempted to understand each sentence, but I tend to enjoy the pure vertigo of these authors read at high speed...one even gets the impression that one is re-experiencing the frenzied state of the authors by doing so. Try it!
Everything you need to know about Beckett and his work plus his work! I love that the book start with s personal account of the editor's relationship with the man. Consequently it escapes being dry and academic. Then the work proceeds in chronological order and you are excited to read what you have already come to understand the genesis of - year by year.
Great survey of the great Beckett. Hard to imagine a much more thorough "sampler," though it's much more than a sampler, with many of his complete works included. Yeah, just get it.
You have to be a bit of a Beckett nut which means
the idealists and optimists will hate this stuff.
But I saw a staging of 'Waiting for Godot'
as a youth - its' mood has never left me. Godot
is in this volume - great!
This is a great way to start reading Sam Beckett's work and the descriptions Richard Seaver gives to help the reader understand context are outstanding. Wish I'd ordered a print copy instead of as many time, I wanted to go back to check something out; difficult (at best) on . if I continue with my study of Beckett's work, this will find its way onto my bookshelf...
Great Beckett reader
