I accidentally ordered this book when trying to order "THE Girl On THE Train", which has garnered much acclaim as of late, but is an altogether different novel, by a different author. After realizing my mistake, I ordered "The Girl On The Train" and ended up with both books. I read both and, I have to say, "Girl On A Train" (THIS book) was SO much better. I loved it. It was a fantastic mystery that kept me very engaged, right from the beginning. There was a moment where I was reading, alone in the waiting room of my doctor's office, and I had gotten to one of the more intense parts of the book (and I was nervous for the main character) and was just coming up on an "Oh my god" moment when the nurse walked in to call my name; I nearly jumped out of my skin. I knew there were going to be twists (it is a mystery, after all), but I didn't see the ones in this book coming. Great read.

I purchased this book by accident because the title was so close to " the Girl on the Train". Turned out to be a happy accident. This is a good crime mystery with some surprises. I also purchased the book I had intended to buy the fist time. That was also a splendid murder mystery. I guess trains in England are good jumping off points for mysteries.
I was one of those people who ordered this book thinking it was Paula Hawkins' The Girl on the Train and didn't realize my mistake until I received it. I subsequently saw the movie version of The Girl on the Train and decided not to purchase that book. .Although I ordered AJ Waines' book back in 2015 (didn't realize it had been THAT long ago!), I just finished reading it. I found it to be gripping and hard to put down. My only quibble was that it appeared to be a self-published book (didn't see any publishing house in the opening pages), and it could have used the services of a professional editor for punctuation (too many single dashes and ellipsis periods, as well as a few misspellings and grammatical errors) and for correcting the many instances where the sentence stopped in the middle of the line and continued on the next (I suspect an incomplete meshing of software used by the author and her publishing partner).

All in all, a very good read. Now I definitely want to read some of her other books.

Edited to add I've seen comments suggesting that the title confusion between the two books was a deliberate marketing ploy. I haven't tried to verify that claim, but my gut tells me it was an innocent coincidence.
This was an interesting, though dark, book. A chance encounter on a train starts a journalist on a trip she never expected. There's a lot of mystery, suspense, and interesting character development. I enjoyed getting to know all the different characters through their own words. By the end all the questions had been answered in a logical way...no crazy stretching to fill in the blanks. A very satisfying read.
This book was one that is still stuck in my mind....days after finishing the story. It was absolutely fantastic & I think Hollywood missed the mark when they made a movie of "The Girl on the Train". This was so much more superior than that book or movie could ever be.

I was impressed by the fact that they started by telling Anna's story, a great deal of Anna's story, then actually told Elly's story about a third or perhaps half of the way through the book, & then continued with Anna.

I did have a sneaking suspicion as to who the perp was but will not reveal my reasons for this & I was correct.
A girl on a train is the perfect read for a rainy day, long train or bus ride. It is singleminded ingetting to the crux of what happened to a seemingly lonely, bland girl on a train who ends up dead. The plot is believable, interesting and there are thrills and chills. Wake s does a bang up job plotting the twists and turns and brings all to compelling g conclusion. Very modern Agatha Charity-ish.
Obviously this is not the renown Hawkins novel of a similar title, but it evidently garnered this author several readers that bought this in error according to previous reviews. Not a bad marketing ploy. I silently criticized the ploy but when thinking about it, it would be hard not to pick that title for this book. It WAS about a girl on a train and what happened to her and why. I enjoyed the read but found it stretching credibility somewhat that Anna, the protagonist in this case, sat next to a another passenger (the girl, Elly) on a train, and then in the course of the plot unfolding this stranger turns out to be linked (albeit indirectly) to Anna’s personal life. I just had to raise an eyebrow to that possibility.

It lagged for me about midway, then picked up. The characters were relatable and developed well enough without being redundant. I liked and felt sorry for the girl on the train and pleased as a reader to get to know Elly when the writing shifted from Anna’s perspective to Elly’s. It goes to show how things can be taken in different ways, in statements made and in notes left behind. The author did a good job of crafting this mystery and exploiting the possibilities.

I never saw the ending coming as it did. I like surprises, but wow.
Did not expect this book. My sister described another plot and I kept waiting for what I thought would happen. I finally realized that I was on a different train. Then I relaxed and thoroughly enjoyed the trip which contained amazing twists and turns, all the way to the end. It wasn't the book club special, but should be.
