The New Wild West Black Gold Fracking and Life in a North Dakota Boomtown Blaire Briody 9781250064929 Books
Without question, The New Wild West is my favorite book of the year. I have always had a strange, yet passionate fascination with North Dakota and the fracking boom. I took a trip to ND two years ago, just to witness things I had read in person. This book captures everything I saw, and so many underlying issues these towns are suffering from. Ms. Briody put herself (and safety, no doubt) in the middle to accurately describe this American enigma. Her subjects are humble yet driven, motivated yet unfulfilled...Bravo on this exceptional story.Tags : The New Wild West: Black Gold, Fracking, and Life in a North Dakota Boomtown [Blaire Briody] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The New Wild West Black Gold Fracking and Life in a North Dakota Boomtown Blaire Briody 9781250064929 Books Reviews
Highly recommend The New Wild West! Briody does an excellent job of displaying the realities of life in a boomtown through story.
This was a well written surprising story. I learned so much about the oil industry. I feel so sorry for all the workers. It is a tough life.,
The arthur does excellent job explaining the intricacies of the oil industry and fracking technology while telling a story of real world people, their lives and their experience with the oil boom.
A fasinating look into the real human cost of the ND oil boom. Blaire captures the desperation of people trying to make it, and mostly failing. She gives a firsthand and gritty account of the cost in lives and relationships of people who desperately hope this will be their big break.
In line with recent books covering the resurgence of US non-core economic regions, such as Janesville and Hillbily Elegy, Blaire provides the reader with genuine and unique view on the changing landscape of North Dakota, and to certain extent of the US economy, in light of new developments of shale plays.
With a firsthand and honesty view of someone who was on the ground sharing live experiences with the book's characters, the New Wild West is an excellent book and thought-provoking.
Fascinating characters, with personal stories of people touched by the boom beautifully interwoven with historical and current facts about the region. I loved the diverse array of perspectives shown, from Natives to farmers to oil field workers. I knew very little about this episode in American history, and learned so much about the motivations and lives of the people involved, sometimes gaining great financial reward but to the detriment of their relationships and personal lives. Highly recommend!
Few places are as inaccessible and remote as Williston, North Dakota, and few topics are more opaque than fracking. With this book, Blaire Briody whisks us to the badlands of northwest North Dakota and vividly describes the workers, the locals, the landscape the the intricacies of the obscure details of this new approach of extraction of fossil fuels. With courage and tenacity, Ms. Broidy parked her small camper in this rowdy and dangerous environment and embedded herself within the lives of the people in Williston during this oil boom. The result is an amazing piece of work that not only lays bare this important subject, it transports you right into the hearts and minds of the individuals closest to it.
