Such a well-written story. Got this to read with my book club and it was an easy read. The story sucked me in and I was quickly entangled in the story with the characters as if I was actually there. Towards the middle things became a little predictable, but I pride myself on being able to guess a plot and what's gonna happen before it does. There were however, some things that totally caught me off guard and I ALWAYS LOVE a good plot twist! This book is definitely worth the read.Tags : Heart of the Matter [Emily Giffin] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <DIV><DIV> Giffin excels at creating complex characters and stories that ask us to explore what we really want from our lives. --<I>Atlanta Journal-Constitution</I></DIV><DIV> </DIV><DIV>Tessa Russo is the mother of two young children and the wife of a renowned pediatric surgeon. Heart of the Matter Emily Giffin 9780312554163 Books Reviews
I have now read all of EG's books except "Baby Proof" which I just started today. I finished "Heart of the Matter" last night. While I enjoyed all of her books, this one included, I was somewhat disappointed with "Heart of the Matter" compared to her other novels. I never felt a strong chemistry between Nick and Tessa -- I never saw what made their marriage tick. Their children were an anchor, of course, but there just didn't seem to be enough additional there to bring the book to the conclusion it ultimately reached. All of a sudden EG springs this odd ending on us absent any real catalyst (for Nick anyway) to explain it. I found MUCH left to be desired in the ending -- I wanted to feel happy about the outcome, feel their happiness or relief or the "all's well that ends well" "We're gonna be okay" sort of feeling EG usually provides her readers ... but it was simply missing here, for me anyway. I wish EG had used some of the letters and emails from Nick (that Tessa mentions getting while she's mulling over her options) to show some insight into Nick's heart, his decision-making process and ultimately the bones of their marriage; that would have gone a LONG way in making the ending "work". It was a real missed opportunity. Last, I felt the character who doesn't end up with Nick was left hanging and maybe that was EG's point, but I was disappointed and left wanting to know more (maybe a good jumping off point for her next novel?) I really like EG's books and I would certainly recommend this one despite the issues I mention here. If you're an EG fan you cannot wait to gobble up the next book -- she's just a really good writer. I was drawn to her as a writer after seeing her interview on The Today Show and because she's a lawyer like myself. That lead me to the library to try out "Something Borrowed" and one month and four EG books later, what can I say? I am a full-blown EG fan. Go ahead and buy this book (or borrow from your local library) but just brace yourself that you may find the ending leaves something to be desired.
The entire story is told by two people—Valerie and Tessa—both who struggle with feelings of anger, betrayal, love and forgiveness. I really enjoyed reading and “listening” to their hearts and minds as they each come to terms with their feelings and struggles. I have not gone through any of what they have, but can relate with struggles of my own. Great read.
I admit I held off on reading Heart of the Matter for well over a year despite being an Emily Giffin fan. The synopsis seemed different from her other books, and I read multiple reviews that weren’t as glowing as the ones for her previous four books. However, I’ve been hooked on her writing style since last spring. She has the innate ability to eloquently portray real life circumstances through the actions of her characters. I know many authors (if not most) exhibit the same skill set, but what I’ve found separates Ms. Giffin from the rest is her knack to not necessarily turn the tables of right and wrong or good and bad, but illustrate how good people with no ill intentions can do the wrong thing. Heart of the Matter is no different.
Tessa and Valerie are two mothers living in the Boston area with little in common until one night, an accident intertwines their lives and flips both of their worlds upside down. Unlike her first four books, Heart of the Matter is told in alternating points of view delivering the story of these two women as they are forced to examine their lives, decisions they’ve made, and what is the heart of the matter.
I don't even know where to begin with Heart of the Matter. Emily Giffin has given us another amazing book that will tug at everyone's heart strings. Never one to disappoint, Ms. Giffin has left a spot in my heart for Tessa and Valerie. Two women so different on the surface but perhaps more alike beneath than either would ever expect.
Tessa has made a conscious decision to commit to being a stay at home mother and wife to her ever in demand pediatric surgeon husband. Tessa accepts that her husband is saving the lives of children, knowing that he doesn't mean to sacrifice his own family for those children, but nevertheless struggles to not feel alone.
Valerie is a single mother to her young son, Charlie. Overly protective and trying to shield him from anything negative has pushed Valerie into a secluded life that includes very little for herself.
When Charlie is injured and is hospitalized a chain of events transpires that nobody could have seen coming - I certainly didn't. At moments in this book, I was crying, yelling, laughing and hurting for all of the characters. So many times I wanted to stop reading the book because I was so distraught. Every mother and every wife's fears coming to fruition in one story was almost too much to bare. I perservered and pushed through that fear and discomfort and was so grateful I did.
Learning to love, forgive and accept your part in the pain of others is never an easy thing to do. Emily Giffin has given us a story that makes us want to appreciate what we have and truly look within to see what we would do if our worst fears were realized.
Emily Giffin fans will not be disappointed and if you aren't already a fan, you will be after Heart of the Matter. One may wonder why I stopped at 4 stars instead of 5. I did love the book, but I was left wanting maybe a little more eventhough I'm not sure what that more is. I therefore, settled on 4.
